Hopkins at the 2011 CUGH Meeting…Report from Montreal
The Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) and the Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC) held its first joint meeting on November 13-15, 2011 in Montreal, hosted by Canadian member McGill University. The meeting had six plenary sessions, 14 interactive workshops, and over 500 posters; speakers were from over 20 different countries, Attendance at this year’s meeting of this relatively young organization was over 1,400, almost double the attendance at the 2010 meeting. Hopkins’ presence at CUGH was also at an all-time high.
The highlight for Hopkins was the presentation of the 2011 CUGH Early Career Award to Dr. Nancy Glass. The award is presented to an individual who has “demonstrated a strong commitment to global health education, research and/or service, and possesses a consistent record of achievement in one or more of these areas.” Dr. Glass is Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health and Associate Professor in the School of Nursing, where her research focuses on clinical care and intervention in the areas of violence prevention and health disparities with projects in the US and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mariam Fofana, a medical student from Hopkins, received the GHEC “Best Student Poster Award” for her poster: “Father knows best? Ethical implications of required paternal consent in pediatric HIV research in Côte d’Ivoire.”
