During my elective I will be working in a resource limited setting in northern India at a mission hospital and traveling into Nepal to provide assitance in medical relief for victims of the recent earthquakes. The mission hospital in India serves a variety of individuals providing both inpatient and outpatient care. My responsibilities at the hospital will be divided between outpatient and inpatient care. The opportunity will provide me with an excellent clinical experience in a resource limited setting. I will have the opportunity to see poverty in an international setting, comparing and contrasting urban poverty in the US with poverty abroad and their effects on health care delivery and outcomes. I also hope to gain an understanding of the effect of natural disasters on healthcare infrastructure. I believe breakdowns in healthcare systems, whether due to external or internal tensions, are a root cause of medical inequity, and I hope to find some common themes and archetypes between healthcare infrastructure deficiencies abroad and in domestic urban areas.
