Ethiopia-Documenting the scale-up of maternal, newborn and child health programs in Ethiopia

The Institute for International Programs (IIP) is based in the Department of International Health. IIP is conducting evaluations of programs being implemented in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and Malawi to support the Ministries of Health in scaling up intervention coverage for mothers, newborns and children under five. Support for the project is provided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Canadian CIDA, UNICEF and others. As a part of this effort, we need to document carefully what is actually implemented in the "Rapid Scale Up" districts in each country, as well as similar activities in comparison districts where the program is not being implemented. Similarly, we need to document contextual factors in both sets of districts that might affect how the program is implemented or its effectiveness. In each country we work with an in-country research partner, so that results are able to be fed back promptly to the Ministry of Health and implementing partners and to build capacity for program evaluation. In Ethiopia the evaluation is supported by the local UNICEF office, and we are in the process of identifying an in-country partner for the documentation work. We will be conducting a cross-sectional assessment of program implementation strength in the first half of 2012.
