Bangladesh - Directorate of MIS - Government of Bangladesh Ministry of Health

The Management Information System (MIS-Health) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) of the Bangladesh Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recently received a United Nations ICT Award for its accomplishments in developing and implementing e- and m-health strategies for the national health system. The Bangladesh Government uses information and communication technology for health and nutrition programs, particularly by contributing to improvements in maternal and child health. The activities of MIS-Health relating to health information systems include collection of data from various sources and cleaning, analyzing, and summarizing the data to generate and distribute information through routine administrative report, website, yearbook, health bulletin, newsletter, etc. The existing data-flow system comprises a network, covering all health facilities and health administrative points from the national to the upazila level. Data from health facilities below the upazila levels are sent to upazila health offices through paper-based forms where these are processed electronically. Several online databases have been created. A database software called District Health Information System (version 2) is used for collecting health service data across the country. Johns Hopkins Investigators work in close collaboration with the DGHS and the MOHFW on a number of projects, including the mCare and JiVitA projects.
