BJ Medical College (BJMC) in Pune, India, has partnered with Johns Hopkins for over twenty years to conduct extensive research in pediatric infectious diseases, in particular HIV and TB. For example, the Cohort for TB research by the Indo-US medical partnership (C-TRIUMPH) is a household contact study that will evaluate the host and microbial factors associated with progression of TB infection to disease in children, and factors associated with treatment outcomes. During a four-week rotation, I seek to expand my understanding of childhood tuberculosis by working with clinicians to learn the approaches and challenges in prevention, diagnosis and treatment. At the same time, I will work with researchers to learn how to conduct large cohort studies in international settings and contribute my skills in data analysis to explore factors associated with childhood TB disease. My training goals are to gain a foundation in pediatrics, while exploring an interest in global infectious diseases research. This rotation will help me achieve my goals by expanding my clinical skills in a resource limited setting while giving me direct experience in how to conduct international public health research in pediatric infectious diseases.
