End Date: 06/30/2010

Y.E.A.H. – Young Empowered and Healthy - is a collaborative, national youth communication partnership of and for youth 15-24 years old implemented under the auspices of the HIV/AIDS Partnership of the Uganda AIDS Commission with the aim of preventing HIV/AIDS and unplanned pregnancy while keeping youth in school. The program is structured to achieve three key results: 1) Positive behavior changes adopted. 2) Community participation increased. 3) Capacity of local institutions to design, coordinate and manage behavior communication change (BCC) efforts and activities increased. Y.E.A.H. is in support of and response to the GOU''''''''s National Strategic Framework for HIV/AIDS Activities in Uganda: 2000/1-2005/6 which calls for improved coordination and intensity of BCC efforts. Y.E.A.H. uses mass media, person-to-person dialogue, and community media approaches to stimulate dialogue and action and model positive practices. The centerpiece of Y.E.A.H. is RockPoint 256, a radio serial drama that portrays realistic challenges faced by young people and strategies to overcome them. The first campaign under the Y.E.A.H. initiative addressed the issue of transactional and cross generational sex among young people and was titled "Something for Something Love". The second phase - "Be A Man" - builds on the work of Y.E.A.H, while focusing specifically on male gender norms that exacerbate the spread of HIV. Be a Man includes mass media materials and a training component to guide young men in the exploration of traditional gender norms that put them at risk of HIV and assists them in developing more gender equitable/less risky norms and practices.
