Resident

Solomon Islands

During the four weeks in Honiara, I will be part of a team from the pediatric emergency medicine department at Johns Hopkins. We hope to work with local physicians, residents, and medical students to hold workshops on common pediatric emergency case presentations. We also hope to work in the emergency room to see patients in order to gain exposure to tropical medicine and medical cases we would not see in Baltimore. Additionally, we hope to have outreach programs to the more rural parts of The Solomon Islands with medical supplies/equipment and trained professionals treating patients in need of medical attention. I believe this elective will allow me to see firsthand tropical medicine cases not seen in Baltimore to further my own fund of medical knowledge. It will also allow me to engage in collaboration with front line providers in Honiara. I will be able to teach in workshops and teach procedural skills I have learned during my training thus far. Overall, this elective will be immensely beneficial in allowing me to learn more about global health and how to work to
integrate this into my future career.
