Medicine - Pediatrics
In Haiti, we will be involved in a variety of clinical activities. This will include evaluations of children who otherwise do not have access to a pediatrician for general heatlth concerns. This will teach me how to apply the clinical skills I've learned in residency to an entirely new population. Some of these children may have never presented to clinical care or been evaluated by a doctor. My goal is to evaluate each of these children to pick out the interventions I can make during this limited visit, whether it be antibiotics, anticipatory guidance or counseling. Ideally, this experience will help me gain an appreciation the resiliency of children and their families in a third world country, but also be able to apply my clinical skills and knowledge to brand new patients.
Additionally, we will be assisting a surgical team with preoperative evaluation for hernia repair and/or testicular surgery and assisting the team with postoperative care. We are trained in providing conscious sedation in the emergency room environment at JHH, and applying these skills in Haiti will be very eduacational. This experience will help us broaden our abilities and learn how to apply our skills when the resources we are used to at an academic center are not available.
