Zambia-Influenza Surveillance in Zambia
This project is being conducted in Macha, Zambia, a rural community approximately 500 km south of Lusaka. A research institute, Macha Research Trust, has been established to conduct clinical and epidemiologic research at the local hospital and in the community. We are establishing an influenza surveillance study at the hospital in several patient populations, including outpatients, inpatients, healthcare workers and HIV-infected children. The goals of the study are to: 1) Characterize the burden of influenza in rural southern Zambia; 2) Describe the seasonal variation in disease burden due to influenza; 3) assess risk factors for influenza infection and severe disease; 4) evaluate the magnitude of nosocomial transmission of influenza. Participants will be enrolled into the study, a questionnaire will be administered and samples will be collected for immediate testing for influenza/RSV in the research lab and storage for further testing. The study will begin in June 2018 and run for 18 months.
