Tracking the Malawi Alcohol Policy: Lessons for Future Advocacy Efforts
As alcohol is seen as a major problem in areas of the developing world, Malawi recently drafted a national alcohol policy, in spite of the strong influence of the alcohol industry. There is speculation regarding the development of this policy, in regards to the idea that certain organizations may have played questionable roles in policy development, to ensure that such a policy would supposedly protect the alcohol industry, and perpetuate alcohol as a way of life in Malawi. Documenting the development of this controversial policy has not been conducted, and doing so will provide pertinent information regarding policy formulation in Malawi. The results of this documentation will prove to be of great assistance for future advocacy policy work in Malawi as well as other countries in sub-Saharan Africa that are also in the process of developing alcohol policies.
