Treatment of Acute Coronary Syndromes in a Teaching Hospital Serving the Indigent Population in Mumbai, India

Much is known about effective therapy of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) including unstable angina (UA), non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), and ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI).1-4 Despite the known benefit of these therapies, they are often underused in eligible patients, especially in patients with low socioeconomic status in developing countries.5 In India, a high rate of disparity in treatment has been described between different regions, hospitals, and patient populations, though there remains a paucity of data regarding this disparity.6 This study will first quantify the treatment of ACS at King Edward Memorial hospital in Mumba, India (KEM), both during hospitalization and at discharge, compared with guideline-recommended therapy. It will subsequently perform interviews and chart reviews to attempt to determine the root cause of any discrepancy between guideline-recommended treatment and actual treatment of ACS.
