My ongoing surgical training in otolaryngology focuses on development of a unique set of skills required to operate on the vital structures of the head and neck. Particular emphasis is also placed on the treatment of head and neck cancer and postoperative management of complex patients. In Cameroon, I will be involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and postoperative care of complex head and neck cases. I will be exposed to unusual pathology, including head and neck manifestations of tuberculosis and HIV. I anticipate being involved in 30-40 cancer surgeries, many of which will be pathologically advanced, and will work with and educate the staff at Mbingo Baptist Hospital regarding appropriate postoperative care and management of postoperative complications. These experiences will inform me on the topic of global health care delivery and will enhance my education in head and neck surgery through exposure to advanced pathology not often seen in the United States. Additionally, I will be tasked with providing excellent care with a limitation on tools and technology, challenging me to solve problems and be resourceful in my care.
