Hemalkasa Medical Clinic in Hemalkasa, India
I will spend my elective in rural India at the Hemalkasa Medical Clinic (Lok Biradari Prakalp) in the jungle of Maharasthra. My training goals are three-fold:
- Dr. Anagha Amte, one of the two clinic physicians and an OB/GYN, has noted that there are higher rates of preeclampsia and ecclampsia in 3 of the villages compared to the surrouding 50 villages that the clinic serves. I would like to conduct a study to determine what risk factors may be contributing to this higher risk, so that we can identify potentially modifiable risks and establish appropriate interventions.
- I will be presetnt for the two weeks before and after the surgery camp at which there are often many women who present with advanced gynecologic disease and often require total abdominal hysterectomies. I will participate in the pre-operative evaluation, assist in the surgeries, adn conduct post-operative care for all of the gynecologic cases taht occur during the camp.
- I will work with the clinic staff to establish a training program for young girls in a nearby vilalge to become community health workers. Approximately 200 people from this vilalge had approached the clinic requesting access to medical care. This program will not only provide basic medical care that is often needed in the villages, but it will also provide a vocational experience for young rural girls. The training program will be modeled off of training already being done with local schoolgirls at this clinic.
