Nigeria: Improving Quality of Family Planning Services (through MCHIP)

Use of modern contraception in Northwest Nigeria remains a major challenge. Family planning (FP) is a key component of maternal health services and contributes significantly to the efforts to reduce maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality. The Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program (MCHIP) is educating women and communities about the importance of FP for adequate spacing between pregnancies and will also engage men to reach out to fellow men to both practice FP and allow their wives to use appropriate FP methods. Therefore, the thrust of MCHIP FP activities is to: Continue the expansion of the method mix for contraception by training more health care workers to provide long-acting methods; Expand services to at least six additional potential high-volume sites; Scale up its efforts to improve the quality of FP services in selected Local Government Authority levels through training and supervision of health providers; and Update doctors on FP and train additional nurse/midwives to provide long-acting methods of FP. About MCHIP: The Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program (MCHIP) is the USAID Bureau for Global Health's maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) program. MCHIP supports global programming in MNCH, immunization, family planning, malaria and HIV/AIDS, and strongly encourages opportunities for integration. Cross-cutting technical areas include water, sanitation, hygiene, urban health and health systems strengthening. MCHIP brings together a partnership of organizations with demonstrated success in reducing maternal, newborn and child mortality rates and malnutrition. Each partner is taking the lead in developing programs around specific technical areas.
