Indonesia: Strengthening All Levels of the Health Care System (through MCHIP)

The Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program (MCHIP) is working at the central level and in three districts in Indonesia to demonstrate how an integrated maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) program can be quickly scaled up in areas with poor health indicators. Program efforts build on USAID investments, including the Health Services Program (HSP), by scaling up materials, tools and high-impact approaches already developed and endorsed by the Ministry of Health. At the national level, MCHIP is advocating for policy updates in the areas of postnatal care, community case management and emergency room protocols for handling maternal and newborn emergencies. At the district level, MCHIP is working to increase utilization of high-quality, district-based, integrated MNCH services, as well as the practice of healthy maternal, neonatal and child behaviors. These efforts will demonstrate how high-impact interventions along the household-to-hospital continuum of care can be applied to strengthen practices and services at all levels of the health system. About MCHIP: The Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program (MCHIP) is the USAID Bureau for Global Health's maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) program. MCHIP supports global programming in MNCH, immunization, family planning, malaria and HIV/AIDS, and strongly encourages opportunities for integration. Cross-cutting technical areas include water, sanitation, hygiene, urban health and health systems strengthening. MCHIP brings together a partnership of organizations with demonstrated success in reducing maternal, newborn and child mortality rates and malnutrition. Each partner is taking the lead in developing programs around specific technical areas.
