Bangladesh: Strengthening Maternal and Neonatal Health (through MCHIP)

Dates

Start Date: 06/01/2009
End Date: 12/31/2014

In the summer of 2009, the Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program (MCHIP) received an associate award in Bangladesh with the goal of improving maternal and neonatal outcomes in Sylhet and Habiganj districts. The project, entitled "MaMoni – Integrated Safe Motherhood, Newborn Care, and Family Planning project," aims to increase the practice of healthy maternal and neonatal behaviors, including family planning (FP), in a sustainable and scalable manner. MaMoni builds on the work of the ACCESS Program–which focused on maternal and newborn health (MNH) in seven sub-districts of Sylhet–integrating FP, handwashing for newborn health, and newborn sepsis management with the intervention package. The project will also expand geographically to reach the Habiganj district, which has a population of 1.8 million. The objectives of the program are to: Increase knowledge, skills and practices of healthy maternal and neonatal behaviors in the home; Increase appropriate and timely utilization of home- and facility-based essential MNH and FP services; Increase acceptance of FP methods and advance understanding of FP as a preventive health intervention for mothers and newborns; Improve key systems for effective service delivery, community mobilization and advocacy; Mobilize community action, support and demand for the practice of healthy MNH behaviors; and Increase key stakeholder leadership, commitment and action for these MNH approaches. About MCHIP: The Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program (MCHIP) is the USAID Bureau for Global Health's maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) program. MCHIP supports global programming in MNCH, immunization, family planning, malaria and HIV/AIDS, and strongly encourages opportunities for integration. Cross-cutting technical areas include water, sanitation, hygiene, urban health and health systems strengthening. MCHIP brings together a partnership of organizations with demonstrated success in reducing maternal, newborn and child mortality rates and malnutrition. Each partner is taking the lead in developing programs around specific technical areas. Jhpiego is the Prime on MCHIP, leading a coalition of the following partners: JSI, Save the Children, PATH, JHU/IIP, Broad Branch, PSI and Macro International. For more information about MCHIP, see full MCHIP description on this Web site or visit www.mchip.net. About Jhpiego: For nearly 40 years, Jhpiego, (pronounced "ja-pie-go"), has empowered front-line health workers by designing and implementing simple, low-cost, hands-on solutions that strengthen the delivery of health care services, following the household-to-hospital continuum of care. We partner with community- to national-level organizations to build sustainable, local capacity through advocacy, policy and guidelines development, and quality and performance improvement approaches.
